The Washington Commanders are moving on from veteran cornerback Marshon Lattimore, with reports confirming that he will be released when the new NFL league year begins on March 11.

The decision is expected to create up to $18.5 million in salary cap space, giving Washington financial flexibility as the team prepares for roster changes ahead of the 2026 season.

Lattimore, 29, spent the past season and a half with the Commanders after being acquired in a trade from the New Orleans Saints during the 2024 deadline.

Injuries Limited His Impact in Washington

Lattimore’s time in Washington was affected by injuries, which prevented him from staying consistently on the field.

Last season, he appeared in nine games, recording:

    • 1 interception
    • 1 fumble recovery
    • 7 pass deflections

His season was cut short after suffering a serious knee injury, including an ACL tear, which raised concerns about his long-term availability.

The Commanders originally traded multiple draft picks to bring him in, hoping he would strengthen their defense immediately and in the future. However, recurring health issues limited his overall impact.

Strong Career Resume Despite Recent Setbacks

Although his recent seasons have been challenging, Lattimore still carries an impressive career profile.

Over 108 career games, the former first-round pick has recorded:

    • 16 interceptions
    • 5 forced fumbles
    • 98 pass breakups
    • 436 total tackles

He made an immediate impact early in his career and earned multiple Pro Bowl selections while playing for New Orleans, establishing himself as one of the league’s top cornerbacks during his prime years.

    What This Means for Washington

For the Commanders, the move signals a shift toward roster flexibility and long-term planning. The cap savings could be used to address multiple needs on both sides of the ball as the team reshapes its defense.

The release had been expected for some time, especially after Lattimore’s injury and limited availability late in the season.

    Possible Interest from Other Teams

Once released, Lattimore will enter free agency as an experienced defensive back who could still provide depth and leadership if healthy.

Teams in need of secondary help, including those looking for veteran experience or familiarity with certain defensive systems, may consider giving him another opportunity.

Even though he is approaching 30 and coming off injuries, his past performance and experience could make him a low-risk option for teams looking to strengthen their defensive backfield.

The release marks the end of a short but injury-hit stint in Washington for Marshon Lattimore. While his best seasons came earlier in his career, his experience and proven ability could still give him another chance elsewhere.

As the new league year approaches, Lattimore’s next destination will be one of the key storylines to watch in the upcoming free agency period.
