WWE commentator Wade Barrett has opened up about the idea of stepping back into the ring for one more match. While fans have often asked if he will make a comeback, Barrett made it clear that there is one opponent he would rather avoid.
During an appearance on Notsam Wrestling, Barrett said he has no interest in being the wrestler whose career ends at the hands of GUNTHER. The former Intercontinental Champion joked that he does not want to return only to be chopped down by “The Ring General.”
Barrett Talks About a Possible WWE Comeback
Wade Barrett returned to WWE in 2020, but not as an active wrestler. Instead, he joined the company’s commentary team and has been working as a color commentator since then.
Barrett is now 45 years old and previously stepped away from full-time wrestling after becoming frustrated with creative plans during his time as an in-ring performer.
Even though he has not competed in recent years, fans still regularly ask whether he will return for one final match. Barrett admitted that the idea of a big comeback moment is interesting to him.
However, he said he would want the right opponent and the right storyline if he ever decides to wrestle again.

Why Barrett Wants to Avoid a Match with GUNTHER
One name Barrett made clear he wants to avoid is GUNTHER.
GUNTHER has built a strong reputation in WWE as a dominant champion and a dangerous opponent. Barrett said that stepping into the ring with someone known for brutal chops and physical matches does not sound like the best way to end a comeback story.
He joked that removing his commentator jacket and stepping into the ring only to be chopped repeatedly by GUNTHER would not be the return he wants.
Barrett explained that if he ever comes back, he would prefer a storyline where he gets a strong run instead of having his comeback cut short.
GUNTHER’s Reputation as a “Career Killer”
GUNTHER has been one of WWE’s most dominant stars in recent years. The powerhouse has earned the nickname “career killer” because several major matches involving him have led to big stars being written off television.
Some of the notable names connected with those storylines include Goldberg, John Cena and AJ Styles.
Barrett said he respects the way WWE has built GUNTHER’s character. He praised the company’s creative team for developing long-term storytelling around the superstar.
According to Barrett, the layered storytelling around GUNTHER feels different from the booking style during his own time as a regular WWE competitor around 15 years ago.
Possible Opponents if Barrett Returns
While Barrett is unsure if he will ever return to the ring, fans have already suggested several possible opponents.
Names like Randy Orton and Sheamus are often mentioned by fans as potential rivals for a farewell match.
Barrett himself previously revealed that the one opponent he would personally choose is Drew McIntyre. The two wrestlers share a close friendship outside the ring, and Barrett has said he would enjoy facing McIntyre if he ever decided to wrestle again.
WrestleMania 42 Match Context
At the moment, GUNTHER remains focused on his upcoming WrestleMania 42 match. He is scheduled to face Seth Rollins and will be looking to extend his impressive singles winning streak.
Barrett, meanwhile, continues to work as a commentator and has not announced any official plans for an in-ring comeback.
