Aaron Nola to Start WBC 2026 Semifinal for Italy Against Venezuela in Surprise Pitching Switch

Italy manager Francisco Cervelli makes a late decision to hand the ball to veteran pitcher Aaron Nola as Italy aims to continue its historic World Baseball Classic run.

Aaron Nola Gets the Nod in Key Semifinal Clash

Team Italy has made a surprising last-minute pitching change ahead of the World Baseball Classic 2026 semifinal against Venezuela. Veteran right-hander Aaron Nola will start the crucial game instead of Michael Lorenzen, a decision confirmed shortly before the matchup in Miami.

Italy manager Francisco Cervelli explained that the decision came down to instinct and trust in his ace pitcher. With a place in the championship game on the line, Cervelli wants his most experienced arm on the mound.

Nola, a 32-year-old pitcher with more than a decade of MLB experience, impressed earlier in the tournament. In his previous WBC outing against Mexico on March 11, he delivered a dominant performance, pitching five scoreless innings, allowing four hits, striking out five batters, and issuing only one walk.

Italy will face Venezuela’s Keider Montero, a 25-year-old right-hander, in the semifinal showdown. The winner of this matchup will move on to face Team USA in the final, scheduled for Tuesday night.

Italy’s Historic Run in the Tournament

Italy has been one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The team has remained undefeated throughout the tournament and is currently enjoying its best performance in WBC history.

Italy advanced to the semifinal after defeating Puerto Rico 8-6 in the quarterfinals. Earlier in the tournament, the team topped Pool B with impressive wins against several strong opponents.

    Great BritainItaly won 7-4
    United StatesItaly won 8-6
MexicoItaly won (Nola pitched 5 scoreless innings)

The Italian offense has also been lively throughout the tournament. Several hitters have stepped up, and the team has developed a unique celebration tradition — players take a shot from an espresso machine after hitting a home run, a ritual that has already been repeated multiple times during the tournament.

    Why the Pitching Change Matters

Initially, Michael Lorenzen was expected to start the semifinal game. However, Cervelli changed the plan to give Italy its best chance to reach the final.

The move could also have strategic implications. If Italy defeats Venezuela, Lorenzen could potentially be available for the championship game against the United States.

There is also the possibility that both pitchers could be used in the semifinal if the game requires multiple arms.

Aaron Nola Looking for a Bounce-Back Season

Nola enters the semifinal with extra motivation. The veteran pitcher endured a difficult 2025 season, dealing with injuries and inconsistency. He made only 17 starts, finishing with a 6.01 ERA and 1.35 WHIP, which were among the toughest numbers of his career.

Despite that setback, his strong performance against Mexico in the WBC has given fans hope that he is returning to form. The outing showed good control, solid velocity, and the ability to dominate hitters again.

A strong semifinal performance could help rebuild confidence heading into the upcoming MLB season.

    Possible Championship Matchup

The tournament bracket has already confirmed one finalist. Team USA advanced after defeating the Dominican Republic in the semifinal, setting up the possibility of a dramatic rematch.

Italy previously stunned the United States earlier in the tournament with an 8-6 victory, so a final between the two teams would add even more excitement.

A Huge Moment for Italy and Nola

For Italy, the semifinal represents a historic opportunity. The team has never advanced this far in the tournament before, and a victory would send them to the biggest game in international baseball.

For Aaron Nola, it is also a moment to prove that he still belongs among the elite pitchers in the game. If he can deliver another strong outing, Italy could be just one win away from a remarkable World Baseball Classic title run.
