Keys had previously appeared during the Royal Rumble match on January 31, which was his most recent televised moment before Friday’s SmackDown event. After that appearance, he competed in several dark matches ahead of SmackDown and Raw while preparing for his full return to WWE television.

The San Jose event finally gave Keys the opportunity to compete in front of a televised audience and begin his run on the SmackDown roster.

The match started with immediate intensity. As soon as the bell rang, Berto slapped Keys several times in an attempt to gain early control of the match. However, Keys quickly responded with his strength and power advantage.
Keys soon took control of the match with a strong powerslam that forced Berto to roll out of the ring to recover. Berto attempted to regroup with his tag partner Angle outside the ring, but Keys followed him and continued the attack.

Berto later tried to shift the momentum by sending Keys face-first into the ring post. The move slowed Keys briefly but did not stop his comeback. When Berto attempted a high-flying attack from the ropes, Keys caught him mid-air and delivered a powerful fallaway slam.
