India have received a big setback just before the T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to begin on February 7, as middle-order batter Tilak Varma has been ruled out of the first three T20Is against New Zealand due to injury.

The New Zealand T20I series, starting January 21, is India’s last international assignment before the World Cup, making Tilak Varma’s injury a serious concern for the team management.

Tilak Varma Injury Update: What BCCI Said

According to the BCCI’s official medical update, Tilak Varma is recovering steadily but is not yet match-ready.

“He is currently stable and progressing well. Tilak will resume physical training and gradually return to skill-based activities once his symptoms have fully resolved and wound healing is satisfactory.”

While he is not officially ruled out of the T20 World Cup yet, the uncertainty has already sparked debate over possible replacements.

Who Can Replace Tilak Varma in T20 World Cup Squad?

Former India opener and cricket expert Aakash Chopra shared a clear and strong opinion on who should replace Tilak Varma if he misses the World Cup.

Why Not Shubman Gill or Yashasvi Jaiswal?

Chopra made it very clear that openers are not required as replacements.

    • Shubman Gill – Not needed
    • Yashasvi Jaiswal – Not needed

Reason: Tilak Varma plays in the middle order (No. 3 or No. 4), and India already have enough openers.

Shreyas Iyer: Aakash Chopra’s First Choice

Aakash Chopra strongly backed Shreyas Iyer as the ideal replacement for Tilak Varma.

    Why Shreyas Iyer Fits Perfectly

    • Natural middle-order batter
    • Strong recent form
    • Excellent performance in Vijay Hazare Trophy
    • Proven performer in high-pressure matches
    • Experience at international and IPL level

“Shreyas Iyer should be an automatic pick. He has been playing really well. He fits the bill perfectly as a senior middle-order batter.”

Other Options Considered by Aakash Chopra

While Shreyas Iyer remains his top pick, Chopra also discussed other names.

    Riyan Parag – All-Round Option

    • Riyan Parag
    • Can bat in middle order
    • Can bowl part-time
    • Already part of India’s T20 plans

Best option if India want a two-skill player, but still second choice.

    Jitesh Sharma – Outside Chance

    • Jitesh Sharma
    • Middle-order batter
    • Wicketkeeper-batter

Downside: India already have enough wicketkeepers, so chances are low.

    Tilak Varma’s Importance to India

Tilak Varma has been a key player for India in T20 cricket. His value was clearly seen when he finished as India’s top scorer in the Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan.

If he fails to recover in time, India will miss:

    • Left-handed balance
    • Calm middle-order presence
    • Big-match temperament

If Tilak Varma is ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2026, Shreyas Iyer looks like the most complete and logical replacement. He brings experience, stability, and proven match-winning ability in the middle order—exactly what India need in a global tournament.
