Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has praised India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, calling his role “the toughest job in India after the Prime Minister’s.”
This comment came after the two met in Nagpur, just before India’s first T20 International match against New Zealand.

    What Shashi Tharoor Said

After meeting Gambhir, Shashi Tharoor shared a post on social media platform X. He highlighted how difficult Gambhir’s job is because of constant public pressure and criticism.

    In simple words, Tharoor said:

    • Gambhir is judged by millions of people every day
    • Despite this, he remains calm and focused
    • He leads the team with quiet determination

Tharoor also called Gambhir an old friend and wished him success as Team India begins an important phase of international cricket.

In Nagpur, enjoyed a good &frank discussion with my old friend @GautamGambhir, the man with the hardest job in India after the PM’s! He is being second-guessed by millions daily but stays calm &walks on undaunted. A word of appreciation for his quiet determination and able… pic.twitter.com/LOHPygVV0E

    Gautam Gambhir’s Response

Gautam Gambhir replied politely to Tharoor’s message. He thanked him for the appreciation and spoke about the misunderstandings around a coach’s role.

    Gambhir said that:

    • People often believe a coach has “unlimited authority”
    • In reality, the truth and logic will become clear over time
    • He is not bothered by criticism and respects his fellow team members

His response showed calmness and confidence, even under pressure.

Why Gambhir’s Job Is So Tough

Coaching the Indian cricket team is not easy. Expectations are always very high, and every decision is closely watched by fans, media, and experts.

Key Challenges Faced by India’s Head Coach

    ChallengeExplanation
Public PressureMillions of fans judge every win and loss
Media ScrutinyEvery decision is discussed and debated
Team SelectionChoosing players always leads to controversy
Big TournamentsPreparing the team for World Cups is crucial

Series Context: India vs New Zealand

The meeting happened ahead of the first T20I match at the New VCA Stadium.

    Why This Series Matters

    • It is a five-match T20I series
    • Helps India prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026
    • The World Cup starts on February 7, 2026

India made a strong start by winning the first match by 48 runs against the New Zealand national cricket team.

Shashi Tharoor’s words highlight how demanding Gautam Gambhir’s role is as India’s head coach. Constant criticism, huge expectations, and national pride make it one of the toughest jobs in the country. Gambhir’s calm and composed response shows why many believe he is the right person for the role.

As India moves closer to the T20 World Cup 2026, all eyes will remain on Gambhir and his leadership of the team.
