Indian batter Shreyas Iyer will remain with India for the remaining matches of the ongoing five-match T20I series against New Zealand, the BCCI has officially confirmed.
Iyer was initially included in the squad only for the first three T20Is as a replacement for injured batter Tilak Varma. However, with Tilak’s recovery taking longer than expected, the Indian team management has decided to retain Iyer for the last two matches as well.
Tilak Varma Injury Status
Tilak Varma is currently recovering from an abdominal injury and recently underwent surgery. He is undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence and has started light physical training.
According to team sources, Tilak progress is positive, but he has not yet regained full match fitness. The medical team has advised caution, and no risks are being taken, especially with the T20 World Cup 2026 approaching. As a result, he will miss the remaining matches of the New Zealand series.
Shreyas Iyer Role in the Squad
Shreyas Iyer’s return to the T20 setup comes after a long gap. His presence adds experience to India’s middle order, especially in pressure situations. The selection committee sees him as a strong backup option for major tournaments, and the ongoing series gives him valuable match time.
With India already winning the series, the remaining games are being used to test combinations rather than rotate heavily.

In the third T20I, India chased down 155 in just 10 overs, with explosive knocks from Abhishek Sharma and captain Suryakumar Yadav, sealing the series in dominant fashion.
With the series already secured, India is expected to continue testing its strongest combinations rather than resting key players. Shreyas Iyer’s extended stay strengthens the batting unit and offers flexibility ahead of bigger challenges. India will now look to complete a clean sweep in the remaining two matches, while New Zealand aim to salvage pride.
