George Russell continued his strong start to the 2026 Formula 1 season by taking pole position for the Sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai. The Mercedes driver delivered a brilliant lap during Sprint Qualifying to secure the top spot on the grid, while teammate Kimi Antonelli completed a Mercedes front-row lockout.

The performance showed Mercedes’ dominance at the Shanghai International Circuit and set the stage for an exciting Sprint race.

    Russell Dominates Sprint Qualifying

Russell was the fastest driver throughout the entire day. He topped the only practice session earlier and continued the same form during Sprint Qualifying.

In the final SQ3 session, Russell set the fastest lap of 1:31.520, which was almost three-tenths quicker than Antonelli in second place. The British driver’s strong pace showed how comfortable the Mercedes car looked on the Shanghai track.

Russell later said the car felt amazing and was a joy to drive during the session.

Russell and Antonelli clearly had the fastest car, while Norris was the quickest non-Mercedes driver in third.

    Antonelli Avoids Penalty After Investigation

During the SQ2 session, Kimi Antonelli was investigated for potentially blocking Lando Norris at Turn 1. The stewards reviewed the incident after the session.

In the end, no penalty was given, which allowed Antonelli to keep his second place on the Sprint grid and maintain Mercedes’ front-row advantage.

Pierre Gasly was also reviewed for a possible impeding incident involving Max Verstappen, but he avoided a penalty as well.

Mercedes Strong All Day in Shanghai

Mercedes showed strong pace from the beginning of the race weekend.

In the only practice session before qualifying, Russell again led the timesheets with a lap of 1:32.741, finishing just ahead of teammate Antonelli.

    Red Bull Faces Difficult Session

Red Bull struggled during Sprint Qualifying compared to Mercedes and McLaren.

Max Verstappen managed only eighth place in the final grid after complaining about the handling of his car. His teammate Isack Hadjar finished tenth.

Both drivers had a difficult SQ2 session and barely made it into the final qualifying round.

    Ferrari Shows Mixed Pace

Ferrari drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc finished fourth and sixth respectively in Sprint Qualifying.

The team also made a setup change during the weekend by switching back to its traditional rear wing after experimenting with a different design earlier in the session.

Although Ferrari showed solid pace, they were still significantly behind Mercedes in Shanghai.

    Drivers Eliminated Early

Several big names were knocked out in the first part of Sprint Qualifying.

The Williams pair of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon failed to progress past SQ1, while Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll also exited early.

Cadillac drivers completed the final row of the grid, with Valtteri Bottas finishing ahead of Sergio Perez. Perez could not set a lap time because of a fuel system issue discovered during practice.

The Sprint race will cover 19 laps, and its results will influence the starting order and points battle for the weekend.

With Mercedes showing dominant pace and Russell leading the field, the Sprint race could be another opportunity for the British driver to strengthen his position early in the 2026 season.
