Cade Cunningham Injury Shakes Detroit Pistons’ Playoff Push: The Detroit Pistons have received worrying news late in the NBA season as All-Star guard Cade Cunningham has been diagnosed with a collapsed lung. The injury occurred during a game against the Washington Wizards and will keep the Pistons’ franchise star out for at least two weeks.

Detroit remains one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, but Cunningham’s absence comes at a critical moment with only a few weeks left in the regular season and the playoffs approaching quickly.

The team has confirmed that Cunningham will be re-evaluated after two weeks, and there is optimism he could return before or during the postseason.

    How the Injury Happened

Cunningham’s injury took place early in the first quarter during Detroit’s win over Washington. The guard dived for a loose ball and collided with Wizards guard Tre Johnson, leaving him in visible discomfort.

Initially, the team believed the issue was related to back spasms or a back contusion, but further medical tests revealed a more serious condition involving the lung.

He left the game shortly after the incident and did not return.

    Cade Cunningham’s 2026 Season Performance

Before the injury, Cunningham was having one of the best seasons of his career and had become the centerpiece of Detroit’s championship push.

His leadership and playmaking have been key reasons the Pistons have stayed near the top of the Eastern Conference standings.

    Recovery Timeline and Return Possibility

A collapsed lung, also known as pneumothorax, is rare in professional basketball but has happened before.

Typical recovery timelines can vary depending on the severity of the injury. In many cases, players miss around three to four weeks.

Detroit’s medical staff plans to evaluate Cunningham again after two weeks. If recovery progresses well, he could potentially return in early April, just before the start of the playoffs.

However, there remains uncertainty regarding his conditioning and effectiveness if he returns quickly.

Detroit currently holds a 3.5-game lead over the Boston Celtics for the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference with about 14 games remaining in the regular season.

Without Cunningham, the Pistons may struggle offensively because he drives much of the team’s scoring and playmaking.

Detroit’s offense drops significantly when he is off the floor, meaning the team will have to rely on other players to carry the scoring load.

Key Players Who Must Step Up

With Cunningham sidelined, several Pistons players are expected to take on larger roles.

    Jalen Duren

Jalen Duren could become Detroit’s on-court leader during this period.

Duren has already been enjoying the best season of his career and is considered a strong candidate for Most Improved Player.

    Tobias Harris

Veteran forward Tobias Harris will also have a bigger responsibility in scoring and leadership.

His experience and consistency will be important during this stretch without Cunningham.

    Daniss Jenkins

Guard Daniss Jenkins could see a major increase in playing time.

After Cunningham left the Wizards game, Jenkins produced 15 points and seven assists, showing he may be able to help stabilize the backcourt.

Impact on the Eastern Conference Playoff Race

Cunningham’s injury could affect not just Detroit but the entire Eastern Conference playoff picture.

If the Pistons struggle without their star guard, teams chasing the top seed could close the gap. The Celtics and other contenders may now see a bigger opportunity to climb the standings.

At the same time, teams fighting for playoff positioning could benefit if Detroit enters the postseason without its best player at full strength.

    All-NBA Award Concerns

Another potential impact of the injury relates to the 65-game eligibility rule for major NBA awards.

Cunningham has played 61 games, and if he misses too much time, he may not reach the required number of games needed to qualify for honors such as All-NBA selection.

This would be unfortunate for a player who has had a standout season leading one of the league’s best teams.

The Pistons now face a challenging stretch of games without their star guard. The next two weeks will be crucial for both the team’s playoff position and Cunningham’s recovery.

If Detroit can stay competitive and Cunningham returns healthy before the postseason, the team could still remain one of the most dangerous contenders in the Eastern Conference.

But if the recovery takes longer than expected, Detroit’s championship hopes could face a serious test just as the playoffs begin.
