Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum has returned to the lineup after a long recovery from an Achilles tendon tear, but the journey back to peak form is still ongoing. The Celtics star is gradually working his way into rhythm after missing significant time due to the injury.

It has been nearly ten months since the serious injury, and Tatum himself understands that returning to his previous level will take patience. After a recent loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, he explained that he simply wants to feel like himself again on the court.

The six-time All-Star is already contributing in several areas, but the Celtics know that a full return to his best level will happen step by step rather than instantly.

Celtics Seeing Positive Impact Despite Shooting Struggles

Even while still regaining his form, Tatum has already started to influence the game in meaningful ways. His presence has strengthened Boston’s defense and rebounding, and he continues to create opportunities for teammates.

One of the biggest early positives is his work on the glass. He is currently averaging around eight defensive rebounds per game since returning, quickly reestablishing himself as one of Boston’s most reliable rebounders.

Tatum’s ability to create offense also remains important. His driving ability and late shot-clock playmaking allow him to generate scoring chances even when his own shot is not falling consistently.

The Celtics believe his shooting rhythm will improve as he gains more minutes and continues adjusting after the long injury break.

Coach Highlights the Importance of Patience

Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault recently spoke about Tatum’s return while preparing to face the Celtics. He pointed out that players coming back from major injuries often go through two different stages: returning to play and returning to peak performance.

According to Daigneault, it is completely normal for a player to need time to regain rhythm and confidence after such a serious injury.

He emphasized that Tatum’s talent alone changes the entire dynamic of the Celtics. Even while still improving physically, his presence raises the team’s ceiling and provides stability due to the familiarity he has built with the roster over the years.

Early Numbers Since Returning to the Court

Tatum’s first stretch of games after his comeback shows both the impact he can still have and the adjustments he is making while regaining his rhythm.

    CategoryFirst 8 Games After Return
    Points Per Game19.1
    Rebounds Per Game8.9
    Assists Per Game3.3
    Steals Per Game1.1
    Field Goal Percentage38.8%

These numbers show that while his scoring efficiency is still building back up, he continues to contribute across multiple areas of the game.

Comparison Made to Michael Jordan’s 1995 Comeback

Tatum’s return has even drawn comparisons from around the league. One Eastern Conference coach compared his situation to Michael Jordan’s return to the NBA during the 1994-95 season.

Jordan had stepped away from basketball for 17 months before returning in March 1995 and needed time to regain his peak form. That comeback eventually led to another dominant championship run with the Chicago Bulls.

The comparison highlights the patience required during a comeback. However, many believe the situations are still very different because Jordan had already established himself as one of the greatest players in league history before his break.

    Celtics Managing Expectations During Comeback

Boston is focused on giving Tatum the time he needs to fully recover and regain his rhythm. The team understands that rushing his progress could hurt both the player and the team’s long-term goals.

Despite the uncertainty around his form, the Celtics remain competitive in the Eastern Conference standings. The team has continued to win games while waiting for Tatum to fully return to his dominant level.

Even with strong regular-season results, Boston knows that its championship hopes depend heavily on Tatum’s continued progress.

Why Tatum’s Return Is Crucial for Boston

The Celtics’ long-term goals for the season revolve around competing for another NBA title. For that to happen, Tatum’s continued development after the injury will be a major factor.

His ability to influence both ends of the floor, create scoring opportunities and lead the offense makes him the centerpiece of Boston’s system.

While the early stages of his return may include some inconsistencies, the Celtics believe that with more game repetitions and team chemistry, Tatum will continue improving as the season moves toward the playoffs.

For now, the focus remains on steady progress and patience as Boston’s star forward works his way back to full strength.
