India have received timely positive news just days before the start of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. All-rounder Washington Sundar is progressing well in his recovery and is expected to begin bowling again within the next few days, raising hopes of his availability later in the tournament.

Sundar has already resumed batting during rehabilitation and is currently pain-free while facing throwdowns at controlled intensity. The focus has now shifted to bowling, which will be the final and most crucial step before he can be cleared for match action.

    What Happened to Washington Sundar?

Sundar suffered an injury earlier this month during the opening ODI against New Zealand. While attempting to stop the ball off his own bowling, he felt sharp pain around his left lower rib area. Medical scans later confirmed a side strain along with a minor fracture, forcing him to miss the remainder of the ODI series and the following T20Is.

Since then, the Indian team management and medical staff have taken a cautious approach, keeping the long-term picture in mind, including the World Cup and the upcoming IPL season.

    Current Recovery Status (Latest Update)

Washington Sundar is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. According to the latest update, his recovery is progressing as planned, with no complications reported.

The medical team is closely monitoring his workload to avoid any setback, especially with the World Cup and IPL both around the corner.

Why Sundar Return Matters for India

Washington Sundar offers India a rare combination of control with the ball and depth with the bat. His off-spin is particularly effective against left-handers, and his calm batting in the lower order adds balance to the playing XI.

Before the injury, Sundar had been one of India’s most economical white-ball bowlers, often trusted in the powerplay and middle overs. His ability to maintain a low run rate while picking up key wickets makes him a valuable option on slower pitches.

Even if he misses the initial group matches, a return during the Super 8 stage could significantly strengthen India’s spin department.

While the selectors have kept backup options ready, including flexible all-round choices, the management is willing to wait for Sundar rather than rushing him back. The focus remains on full fitness rather than short-term gains.

India, as defending champions, are keen to enter the knockout phase with their strongest possible combination, and Sundar’s fitness could play a key role in that plan.

This update comes as a big relief for Team India and fans alike. Washington Sundar’s recovery is on track, and if he clears bowling and fitness tests on time, he could still make a meaningful impact in the T20 World Cup 2026.
