The KFC Big Bash League (BBL) has officially confirmed a new playing rule that will be introduced from next season, marking another step in the league’s push to evolve modern T20 cricket. The rule will allow teams to use a Designated Batter and a Designated Fielder, giving clubs more flexibility while ensuring fans continue to see the biggest stars on the field.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, 14 January 2026, ahead of the BBL|16 season, which will be played during the Australian summer. The change applies to the men’s T20 competition and has been approved by Cricket Australia, following consultations with players, coaches, and league officials.

How the New BBL Rule Works

Under the new rule, teams may choose to name one player from their XI as a Designated Batter before the toss. This player is allowed to bat but cannot field or bowl. If a team selects a designated batter, it must also nominate a Designated Fielder, who will take the field instead of the batter. The designated fielder cannot bowl, but is allowed to act as the wicketkeeper.

At the change of innings, the two players swap roles. Importantly, the rule is optional, meaning teams can still play with a traditional XI if they prefer.

Why the Rule Has Been Introduced

Cricket Australia said the new rule is designed to protect players, extend careers, and attract star talent. Senior batters managing injuries or heavy workloads can focus on batting, while younger or specialist fielders get valuable match experience. The rule may also encourage international Test players to take part in more BBL matches after long overseas tours.

League officials stressed that the fundamentals of cricket remain unchanged. Instead, the rule adds a strategic element, allowing teams to balance attack and defence more effectively while keeping the game fast and entertaining.

What It Means for the Future of the BBL

The Designated Batter rule continues the BBL’s tradition of innovation while responding to modern player demands. Fans can expect to see more explosive batting, sharper fielding, and smarter team tactics in BBL|16. While the rule will not apply to the women’s competition at this stage, its impact will be closely reviewed in future seasons.

As the next Big Bash season approaches, teams will now begin planning how best to use this rule to gain an edge, making BBL|16 one of the most anticipated editions of the tournament.
