Iowa State faces a crucial Sweet 16 matchup against Tennessee in the 2026 NCAA Tournament, but the availability of one of its key players remains uncertain. Senior forward Joshua Jefferson is dealing with an ankle injury that has placed his status in doubt ahead of the game.

The No. 2 seed Iowa State Cyclones will meet the No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers with a place in the Elite Eight on the line. As the team prepares for the high-stakes matchup, all attention is on whether Jefferson will return to the lineup.

The Cyclones enter the game with strong momentum, but Jefferson’s availability could play a major role in the outcome.

    Joshua Jefferson Injury Update

Joshua Jefferson suffered an ankle injury during the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The injury occurred early in Iowa State’s dominant 108–74 win over Tennessee State, forcing the senior forward to leave the game after just three minutes.

Jefferson did not return to that game and later missed Iowa State’s Round of 32 matchup against Kentucky.

Despite his absence, the Cyclones performed well and defeated Kentucky while scoring 82 points, including a strong offensive showing in the second half.

Heading into the Sweet 16 matchup, Jefferson is expected to be a game-time decision.

Iowa State head coach T.J. Otzelberger provided an update on Jefferson’s condition, explaining that the forward has been working intensively to recover.

According to the coaching staff, Jefferson has been spending extensive time in the training room and continues to make progress each day. The team plans to evaluate his condition right up until tip-off before making a final decision on his availability.

    Iowa State Players Stepping Up

Even without Jefferson in the previous round, Iowa State managed to produce strong offensive performances from several players.

Senior guard Tamin Lipsey delivered one of the best games of his career against Kentucky. He scored 26 points on efficient shooting, marking the highest-scoring performance of his college career.

Forward Milan Momcilovic also played an important role in the victory. Known for his three-point shooting, he added 20 points and converted four shots from beyond the arc.

Potential Impact on the Tennessee Game

Jefferson’s possible return could provide Iowa State with additional scoring and versatility on both ends of the floor. His presence would help strengthen the Cyclones’ rebounding and ball movement while also improving defensive matchups.

If Jefferson is unable to play, Iowa State will again rely heavily on the scoring contributions of Lipsey and Momcilovic.

The Cyclones showed in the previous round that they can still perform at a high level without their star forward, but having Jefferson available would give the team a significant boost as they attempt to advance further in the tournament.

    Iowa State vs Tennessee Outlook

The Sweet 16 matchup will be one of the most important games of Iowa State’s season. Tennessee enters the contest as a strong opponent, making the Cyclones’ lineup decisions even more important.

Jefferson’s status will remain a key storyline until shortly before tip-off, when the team finalizes its lineup for the game.
