Veteran point guard recovering from ACL injury while continuing leadership role with Rockets and players’ union

Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet remains sidelined after suffering a serious knee injury earlier in the 2025–26 NBA season. Although the veteran point guard has missed most of the campaign, he has not completely ruled out the possibility of returning before the season ends.

VanVleet continues to recover from surgery while staying closely involved with the team and maintaining his leadership responsibilities both on and off the court.

    Fred VanVleet’s Injury: What Happened?

VanVleet suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during an unofficial team workout in September. The injury required surgery and forced him to miss the entire NBA season so far.

ACL injuries are among the most serious knee injuries in basketball and usually require a long rehabilitation period before a player can return to full competition.

Although a return this season would be earlier than the usual recovery timeline, VanVleet has continued working toward recovery.

    Possibility of a Late-Season Return

The Rockets’ veteran guard has kept the door open for a potential return late in the season if his recovery progresses well.

VanVleet acknowledged that returning quickly from ACL surgery is extremely difficult but said he does not want to completely rule it out. If he feels physically ready and receives medical clearance, he would like to play again before the season concludes.

The 2026 Western Conference playoffs begin in mid-April, which would be roughly seven months after his injury. That timeline is shorter than the usual recovery period, making a comeback unlikely but still technically possible.

Houston entered its matchup against the Golden State Warriors dealing with several injuries across the roster.

With many regular starters unavailable, Golden State relied heavily on players such as Draymond Green and Jonathan Kuminga.

    Fred VanVleet’s Leadership Role

Even though he has not been able to play, VanVleet remains an important presence for Houston. He regularly attends games, including road matchups, and continues participating in limited on-court activities during rehabilitation.

His experience as a veteran point guard provides guidance to younger players while the team continues competing in the Western Conference.

    VanVleet’s Role Beyond the Court

In addition to his role with the Rockets, VanVleet also holds an important leadership position in the NBA.

He currently serves as the president of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), representing players across the league. The role places him at the center of discussions about the future of the league and issues affecting players.

Balancing his recovery with union responsibilities has added another dimension to his leadership during this period.

VanVleet has long been valued for his playmaking ability, perimeter shooting, and defensive toughness.

Fred VanVleet’s ACL injury has kept him off the court for most of the 2025–26 NBA season, but the veteran guard continues to stay connected with the team and focused on recovery. Although a return this season remains uncertain, he has not ruled out the possibility if his rehabilitation progresses well.

For now, Houston will continue relying on its healthy players while hoping that VanVleet can eventually return to provide the experience and leadership that have defined his NBA career.
