Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has officially withdrawn from the Australian Open 2026, pulling out just hours before her scheduled third-round match. Osaka was set to face Australian wildcard Madison Inglis on Rod Laver Arena, but a left abdominal injury forced her to make the difficult call.

Tournament organisers and the WTA confirmed that the decision was taken before the match began, meaning Inglis advanced via walkover.

    Reason Behind Osaka Withdrawal

Osaka cited a recurring left abdominal issue, a problem that has troubled her in recent seasons. The discomfort reportedly increased after her second-round match, where she required medical attention during play. With the tournament entering its physically demanding phase, her team decided it was safer not to continue.

In a message shared with fans, Osaka explained that listening to her body was the priority, even though she felt emotionally attached to her Australian Open run this year.

Despite the early exit, Osaka showed encouraging signs of form in Melbourne. She fought through two tough three-set matches, displaying strong baseline play and resilience before the injury escalated.

Her second-round match included a medical timeout, which later proved to be an early warning sign.

    What the Walkover Means

Because the match never started, Inglis received a walkover and moved directly into the Round of 16. This marks the biggest Grand Slam result of her career so far.

Next, Inglis is set to face world No. 2 Iga Świątek, as Australian hopes rest on the home favourite continuing her run.

    Impact on the Tournament

Osaka’s withdrawal led to changes in the Rod Laver Arena schedule. The situation was further complicated by extreme heat in Melbourne, with temperatures crossing 40°C, forcing play suspensions on several outdoor courts.

From a competitive standpoint, the women’s draw opened up further, with one of the tournament’s biggest names exiting earlier than expected.

Osaka Current Situation and Next Steps

Osaka is currently ranked world No. 17 and remains one of the highest-ranked mothers on the WTA Tour. She has acknowledged that post-pregnancy physical changes may be contributing to ongoing fitness challenges.

Her focus now shifts to recovery, with the aim of returning fully fit for the upcoming hard-court events later in the season.

Naomi Osaka’s Australian Open 2026 journey ended sooner than planned, but her decision highlights the importance of long-term health over short-term results. Fans across the tennis world have sent messages of support, hoping to see her back on court soon and competing at her best once again.
