The uncertainty traces back to last year’s tragic stampede incident following RCB’s IPL title celebrations, which resulted in multiple casualties. Since then, the state government has imposed restrictions on large-scale events at the venue.
Although conditional approval has been granted, several additional requirements including enhanced crowd control, emergency access routes, and responsibility for surrounding public roads are yet to be fully resolved. Backup Venues Shortlisted for the IPL 2026 Opener
According to discussions within the IPL Governing Council, two venues are fully prepared to step in if Bengaluru is ruled out:
- DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai – A proven IPL venue with modern infrastructure and experience hosting high-profile matches.
- Mullanpur Stadium, New Chandigarh – The home ground of Punjab Kings, seen as well-equipped for marquee fixtures, including an opening ceremony.
If RCB cannot host the opener, the match could be shifted to Mullanpur, especially as defending champions traditionally earn the right to host the season’s first game.

Deadline Set for Final Decision

A similar situation applies to Rajasthan Royals, who are also awaiting venue clearance in Jaipur and may temporarily host matches in Pune or Guwahati.
