WWE star Carmelo Hayes recently reflected on his time as one of the leading names in NXT and the role Shawn Michaels played in helping him grow as a performer. Hayes said Michaels pushed him to raise his level while he was holding major championships on the brand.

During an appearance on the Battleground Podcast, Hayes explained how the guidance from Michaels helped him prove he deserved his place at the top of NXT.

Carmelo Hayes’ Rise as an NXT Champion

Carmelo Hayes became one of the most successful wrestlers in WWE NXT before moving to SmackDown in 2024.

During his time on the brand, Hayes held the NXT Championship for 182 days and also became a two-time NXT North American Champion. These accomplishments made him one of the most decorated stars of his era in NXT.

At the time he reached those milestones, Hayes was 31 years old and had quickly established himself as a central figure in the brand’s roster.

His championship runs positioned him as one of the performers responsible for carrying NXT forward during a period of change for the show.

    Shawn Michaels Set High Expectations

Hayes revealed that Shawn Michaels, who works as the Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative for NXT, played an important role during that time.

According to Hayes, Michaels challenged him to prove that he deserved to hold multiple championships.

Hayes recalled Michaels telling him that winning both titles would raise expectations and that he would need to show everyone why he deserved those opportunities.

Michaels often reminded Hayes that the company was trusting him with a major role and that he needed to deliver strong performances to justify that faith.

Those conversations motivated Hayes to continue improving his work in the ring and on the microphone.

Preparing for the Next Stage of His Career

Hayes said the guidance from Michaels helped prepare him for the next step in his WWE journey.

By pushing him to perform at a higher level, Michaels helped him develop the confidence and experience needed to transition to the main roster.

Hayes believes those lessons played a major role in shaping his growth as a professional wrestler.

NXT’s Changing Era and Fan Reactions

Hayes also spoke about the changes happening within NXT during his championship run.

His time at the top came during a transition period as the brand moved away from the well-known “Black and Gold” era and began building a new identity.

Hayes said fan reactions can often change quickly depending on which wrestlers are popular at the moment. While he believed he had strong support from fans, he understood that the crowd’s preferences can shift over time.
