The Berwyn Eagles Club, a well-known venue for independent wrestling in the Chicago area, will stop hosting wrestling events after one final show later this month. The announcement has surprised many wrestlers and fans who have followed events at the venue for more than two decades.
The decision comes after an incident connected to another wrestling event that led to involvement from town officials, lawyers, and police.
Incident That Led to the Decision
According to statements shared online, the situation began after an alleged incident following a wrestling show held on March 28.
Venue owner Brett Lauderdale said the incident has been widely discussed and described by some people as a “fake stabbing.” However, Lauderdale strongly denied that description and said the reports about the situation were not accurate.
He stated that the incident was not a planned stunt and claimed the story about a fake stabbing was created to justify a violent altercation.
People who attended the event shared mixed accounts. Some said they did not believe a stabbing occurred, while one wrestler said he saw a person pushed or tackled but did not see any knife involved.

Licenses and Permits Reportedly Pulled
Screenshots shared on wrestling media platforms suggested that the venue’s licenses and permits were removed by town officials after a video connected to the incident circulated.
A message reportedly sent by a venue contact named Chuck said that the town had pulled the license because of the video.
According to Lauderdale, the legal complications and pressure from local authorities ultimately forced the club to stop hosting wrestling events.
He said it was disappointing to see more than twenty years of wrestling history at the Berwyn Eagles Club end in this way.
Fans and Wrestlers Share Memories
After the announcement, many wrestlers and fans posted messages remembering the venue and its importance to the Chicago independent wrestling scene.
Several performers shared photos and stories from past events at the club. One wrestler posted a picture from a match featuring Jon Moxley and described the venue as having a special atmosphere that made every show feel unique.
Another wrestler wrote that the venue had been an important part of his career and said the club would always be remembered by those who competed there.
Many fans also expressed sadness that such a historic location would stop hosting wrestling shows.
