The Dallas Cowboys have continued their activity in the 2026 NFL free agency period by agreeing to bring back outside linebacker Tyrus Wheat. The move marks a return for Wheat, who originally began his NFL career with Dallas before spending last season with the Detroit Lions.

The decision comes as the Cowboys continue making roster adjustments ahead of the new league year, focusing on strengthening defensive depth and improving special teams.

Tyrus Wheat Returns to Dallas Cowboys

Tyrus Wheat first joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2023. During his first stint with the team, he appeared in 20 games across two seasons, contributing mainly as a depth defender and special teams player.

After leaving Dallas, Wheat spent the 2025 season with the Detroit Lions, where he saw increased playing time and produced the best numbers of his young career.

    Cowboys Focus on Defensive Depth

The Cowboys’ decision to bring Wheat back is part of a broader strategy to strengthen their defensive rotation. Dallas has already made several additions during the current free agency period, and Wheat becomes another piece in building roster depth.

Coaches are expected to use Wheat primarily as a special teams contributor and backup edge defender, providing flexibility in defensive packages and additional support during long stretches of the season.

    Cowboys Continue Managing Salary Cap

Along with roster moves, Dallas has also been working to manage its salary cap space before the official start of the new NFL league year.

One of the recent adjustments involved wide receiver Jonathan Mingo, whose contract was restructured to create more financial flexibility for the team.

Mingo is entering the final year of his rookie contract after being acquired in a 2025 trade with the Carolina Panthers, where Dallas sent a fourth-round pick and received Mingo along with a seventh-round selection.
