March 4, 2026 turned into a historic night at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, where New Zealand defeated South Africa in the first semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The match will be remembered for one of the most explosive innings in the history of the format.

Chasing a target of 170 runs, New Zealand completed the chase in 12.5 overs, winning by 9 wickets. The victory also secured their place in the T20 World Cup 2026 final in Ahmedabad.

The highlight of the match was Finn Allen’s record-breaking century, which came in just 33 balls, the fastest ever in the history of the Men’s T20 World Cup.

Finn Allen’s 33-Ball Century Breaks World Cup Record

Finn Allen produced a breathtaking innings that completely dismantled the South African bowling attack. His aggressive stroke play and fearless hitting turned a competitive chase into a one-sided contest.

Allen reached his century in 33 balls, breaking a long-standing tournament record held by West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who had scored a 47-ball hundred in the 2016 World Cup.

The knock was filled with boundaries and sixes across the ground, showing complete control over pace and spin. Allen’s innings was also one of the fastest centuries recorded against a full-member team in T20 international cricket.

Key Highlights of Allen’s Record Innings

    • Century in 33 balls
    • Fastest century in T20 World Cup history
    • One of the fastest centuries in all T20 internationals
    • Played a major role in New Zealand’s dominant semi-final win

Even while dealing with cramps late in the innings, Allen continued attacking and finished the match with a boundary that also brought up his historic hundred.

Seifert and Allen’s Opening Partnership Changed the Match

Allen received strong support from Tim Seifert, and the two openers built a match-winning partnership at the top.

The pair added 117 runs for the first wicket, putting South Africa under massive pressure early in the chase. Their aggressive approach in the powerplay ensured that the target was well within reach before the halfway stage.

Seifert scored 58 runs from 33 balls, playing a perfect supporting role while Allen dominated the scoring.

This partnership quickly shifted momentum towards New Zealand and effectively sealed the result.

The innings had a difficult start when early wickets slowed their scoring. However, the middle order tried to rebuild the innings.

A strong late counterattack came from Marco Jansen, who scored 55 runs from 30 balls, helping South Africa reach a competitive total.

But the total proved insufficient once New Zealand’s aggressive chase began.
