The latest NCAA Bracketology update for March 1, 2026 has brought more clarity to the tournament picture, with Houston projected as a No. 2 seed in the South Region. While the Cougars are not currently on the No. 1 line, the regional location could still give them a major advantage as March Madness approaches.

With Selection Sunday getting closer, the race for top seeds and final tournament spots is entering its decisive phase.

    Houston Positioned for Home-Region Advantage

Houston currently holds a 23-5 overall record and sits at 11-4 in Big 12 play. The Cougars recently bounced back strongly from a three-game losing streak with a dominant 102-62 win over Colorado, showing they are regaining form at the right time.

Despite being projected as a No. 2 seed in the South, the regional rounds are expected to be played in Houston. This setup could provide a near home environment for the Cougars, giving them strong crowd support and familiar conditions.

If the bracket holds, Houston could be on a collision course with No. 1 seed UConn in a potential Elite Eight matchup. The team will also be looking to move past last season’s disappointment after falling short in the later stages of the tournament.

Projected No. 1 Seeds Gaining Momentum

The top line of the bracket is beginning to take shape, with four teams emerging as strong No. 1 seed candidates based on recent performances.

Each of these teams has built strong momentum late in the season, strengthening their position for top regional placement.

Other Teams Still in the Title Conversation

While the No. 1 seeds look stable for now, several teams remain in contention to move up the bracket depending on conference tournament results. Purdue, Iowa State and Florida are among the teams still pushing to improve their seeding and make a late surge.

    Bubble Watch Intensifies

The fight for the final tournament spots remains tight. Santa Clara and TCU are currently projected inside the field, while Auburn has fallen out after a recent stretch of losses.

Conference results over the next week will play a major role in deciding which teams make the final cut.

With Selection Sunday approaching in Indianapolis, every game now carries major importance. Houston’s potential home-region path could become one of the biggest storylines if the current projection holds.

As conference tournaments begin, the final seedings and regional matchups are expected to shift, setting the stage for another unpredictable and highly competitive NCAA Tournament.
