The Atlanta Falcons have fired assistant coach LaTroy Lewis just weeks after his hiring, following serious sexual assault allegations connected to his previous role at the University of Michigan. The decision comes as law enforcement in Ann Arbor continues an active investigation into an incident that allegedly took place in December 2024.
According to officials, the Ann Arbor Police Department recently launched a formal investigation after being made aware of the claims. Authorities confirmed that the case remains open and is currently under review by detectives.
Allegations Stem from 2024 Incident in Ann Arbor
The investigation centers on accusations that Lewis sexually assaulted a woman after the two met through an online dating platform. Reports claim the interaction escalated after a series of inappropriate messages, followed by an in-person meeting at a hotel in Ann Arbor.
The accuser alleges that the encounter turned violent and included physical and sexual assault. It has also been claimed that Lewis later tracked the woman’s location and sent threatening messages.
The two reportedly remained in contact afterward, and a separate dispute at the woman’s residence in early 2025 led to a police response. At the time, officers did not file charges due to limited evidence and statements made at the scene.
Sherrone Moore Named in Complaint, Denies Allegations
The situation has also drawn attention to former Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore. The accuser claims she informed Moore about the alleged assault through social media and believed the matter would be formally reported through university procedures.
However, it is alleged that the complaint was not forwarded to the university’s Title IX office, as required under institutional guidelines. Additional claims suggest Moore did not take action after being informed of a later dispute involving Lewis.
Moore’s legal representative has strongly denied all accusations, stating that he did not ignore misconduct reports and did not engage in any inappropriate behavior.

Michigan Launches Internal Review of Athletic Department
University of Michigan officials described the allegations as serious and confirmed that an internal review is underway. The investigation is examining both the circumstances surrounding Moore’s departure and the broader culture and reporting practices within the athletic department.
University representatives have encouraged anyone with relevant information to come forward as external attorneys conduct a wider assessment of how complaints have been handled in recent years.

Falcons Act Quickly as Case Remains Ongoing
The Falcons’ decision to part ways with Lewis reflects the seriousness of the situation as the legal process continues. The organization has not provided additional details but moved swiftly after the investigation became public.
With both police and independent reviews ongoing, the case is expected to develop further in the coming weeks. The outcome could have wider implications for accountability, reporting procedures, and oversight within college athletics and professional football.
