Santner–McConchie Partnership Changes the Game
New Zealand’s innings started positively but quickly ran into trouble. After a quick start from Finn Allen (23) and Tim Seifert, the team slipped to 84/6 in the middle overs.
At that stage, Sri Lanka looked in control. However, captain Mitchell Santner and Cole McConchie produced a match-winning partnership. The duo added 84 runs for the seventh wicket, completely shifting the momentum.
Santner played a captain’s knock of 47 runs off 26 balls, hitting four sixes, while McConchie remained unbeaten on 31 off 23 balls. The Black Caps scored nearly 70 runs in the last four overs, finishing with a competitive total of 168/7.
For Sri Lanka, Maheesh Theekshana (3 wickets) and Dushmantha Chameera (3 wickets) were the standout bowlers, but the late surge proved costly.

Sri Lanka Collapse Under Pressure
Chasing 169, Sri Lanka suffered an early blow when Pathum Nissanka was dismissed on the first ball by Matt Henry. The hosts struggled throughout the powerplay and could only reach 20/2, their lowest powerplay total in T20 World Cup history.
The middle order also failed to build partnerships. Wickets fell regularly as New Zealand’s spinners took control of the game. Rachin Ravindra delivered a brilliant spell, picking up 4 wickets for 27 runs, his best figures in T20 internationals.
Only Kamindu Mendis (31) and Dunith Wellalage (29) showed some resistance, but the lack of boundaries and intent meant Sri Lanka finished at 107/8.

Spin Dominance Seals the Victory
One of the biggest factors behind New Zealand’s win was their smart bowling strategy. The team bowled 17 overs of spin, taking full advantage of the slow surface in Colombo. The variation in pace and tight lines made scoring difficult for the Sri Lankan batters.
Captain Mitchell Santner later said that the pitch offered more turn than expected and the plan was to bowl slow and keep the pressure on.
