World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz produced one of the most memorable performances in Australian Open history on Friday night, defeating Alexander Zverev in a marathon semifinal to reach his first-ever Australian Open final.

The match, played on Rod Laver Arena, lasted 5 hours and 27 minutes, making it the longest men’s semifinal in Australian Open history and the third-longest match ever at the tournament.

Alcaraz won the five-set battle 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-7(3), 6-7(4), 7-5, showing extraordinary mental strength after struggling with leg cramps and losing a two-set lead.

A Semifinal for the History Books

Alcaraz looked in control early as he took the first two sets with aggressive baseline play and sharp movement. However, late in the third set, the Spaniard began to suffer from cramps, which slowed him down and allowed Zverev to claw his way back into the match.

Zverev forced two consecutive tie-break wins and even served for the match at 5–3 in the final set, appearing on the verge of another Australian Open final.

But Alcaraz refused to give in.

He broke Zverev twice in a dramatic turnaround, winning the final four games of the match to seal victory 7–5 in the deciding set. As the final point ended, Alcaraz collapsed on the court in exhaustion and relief.

Alcaraz: “I Was Struggling, But I Never Gave Up”

Speaking after the match, Alcaraz admitted he was close to physical limits.

“I was struggling. My legs were really tight, and it was very difficult to move,” Alcaraz said.
“But I remembered what my grandfather always told me — play with your head, your heart, and courage.”

That mindset helped him survive the toughest moments of the match and produce one of the greatest comebacks of his career.

    Historic Milestones for Carlos Alcaraz

This victory adds several major achievements to Alcaraz’s already impressive résumé:

    • First Australian Open final
    • Youngest player to reach finals at all four Grand Slams
    • One win away from completing a career Grand Slam
    • Reached the AO final without losing a match before this semifinal

At just 22 years old, Alcaraz is now on the brink of history.

    Heartbreak for Zverev Once Again

For Alexander Zverev, the defeat was deeply disappointing. After coming back from two sets down and holding a lead in the fifth set, the German was unable to close out the match.

Zverev, who lost the Australian Open final in 2025, was left emotional after the match but showed sportsmanship by congratulating Alcaraz at the net.

    What’s Next?

Alcaraz will now face the winner of the second semifinal between Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open 2026 final, scheduled for Sunday.

After this epic semifinal, fans are already calling Alcaraz’s run one of the most courageous in modern Grand Slam history.

This semifinal was more than just a tennis match. It was a test of endurance, belief, and character. Carlos Alcaraz passed every test and now stands just one win away from completing tennis’s rarest achievement.
