Indian cricket has found a new headline-maker. Fourteen-year-old opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi created history at the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2026 by going past Virat Kohli in the list of most runs by an Indian in Youth ODIs. The landmark moment came during India group match against Bangladesh, where the teenager played with maturity far beyond his age and stamped his authority on the biggest junior stage.

India were under pressure early after losing quick wickets, but Vaibhav counter-attacked with clean stroke play and calm shot selection. He reached his fifty in just 30 balls, becoming the youngest player ever to score a 50+ at an Under-19 World Cup. With those runs, he crossed Kohli long-standing Youth ODI tally and also touched the 1,000-run mark in the format — a rare achievement for any young batter, let alone a 14-year-old.

How Vaibhav Suryavanshi Surpassed Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli scored 978 runs for India in Youth ODIs between 2006 and 2008, a record that stood for nearly two decades. Vaibhav entered the Bangladesh match needing only a few runs to move ahead. As soon as he got going, the record fell, and by the time he completed his half-century, he had also become one of the fastest Indians to reach 1,000 Youth ODI runs.

What stood out was not just the numbers, but the context. India were rebuilding their innings, and Vaibhav chose intent over panic — rotating strike, punishing loose balls, and handling spin with ease.

    A Record-Breaking World Cup Moment

Vaibhav fifty against Bangladesh also made him the youngest player in U19 World Cup history to score 50+, setting a new global benchmark. The innings came in only his second match of the tournament, after a quiet start in the opening game. The quick turnaround highlighted his mental strength a quality coaches often say separates good players from special ones.

Former age-group selectors believe this innings could be a turning point in the tournament, not just for Vaibhav but for India title hopes as well.

Breaking Virat Kohli youth record is not just a statistical milestone. Kohli U19 numbers were once seen as a sign of what was to come at senior level. Vaibhav achieving this at 14 years of age puts him in a rare category and marks him as one of the most exciting prospects Indian cricket has produced in recent years.

With the knockout stages still ahead in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, all eyes will now be on how Vaibhav handles rising expectations. If this knock is any indication, India may have found a player who thrives under the spotlight.
