The Northern Superchargers have officially been rebranded as Sunrisers Leeds, marking a major change for the Leeds-based franchise in the Hundred League. The new name comes after a complete takeover by the Sun Group, one of the biggest business houses in Indian sport and media.

This rebranding will take effect from the 2026 season of the The Hundred and signals a fresh identity for the team, both on and off the field.

    Sun Group takes full control

The Sun Group has acquired 100% ownership of the franchise in a deal worth just over £100 million. As part of the agreement, Yorkshire County Cricket Club sold its 51% stake, while the England and Wales Cricket Board offloaded its remaining 49%.

With this, Sunrisers Leeds becomes one of only two Hundred teams to be fully privately owned.

    Why the name ‘Sunrisers Leeds’?

The new name aligns the franchise with the Sun Group’s global cricket brand. The group already owns successful teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and Sunrisers Eastern Cape in SA20. The word “Sunrisers” reflects a unified identity across leagues, while “Leeds” keeps the team’s strong local connection.

The name Sunrisers Leeds has already been officially registered in the UK.

New branding and possible changes ahead

Fans can expect a new logo, colours, and overall branding before the 2026 season begins. There could also be changes behind the scenes. Reports suggest that Daniel Vettori, currently associated with Sunrisers Hyderabad, may take on a key coaching role following the departure of Andrew Flintoff.

    Strong recent performances

The transition comes at a positive time for the franchise.

    • The women’s team recently won the Hundred title
    • The men’s team reached the Eliminator stage, showing steady progress

More changes coming in the Hundred

The Hundred League is entering a new phase. Two more franchises are expected to undergo rebranding, and from 2026, the league will also introduce a player auction system. This move aims to increase player salaries, attract more overseas stars, and make the competition even more exciting.

The rebranding of Northern Superchargers to Sunrisers Leeds is more than just a name change. It represents a new era of investment, ambition, and global connection, as the Sun Group looks to build a strong and competitive team for the future of the Hundred League.
