The Arizona Cardinals are preparing for several possible scenarios as the 2026 NFL Draft approaches. While Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson is believed to be one of the team’s preferred targets, Arizona may need to move up in the draft to secure him.

Holding the No. 34 overall pick, the Cardinals sit early in the second round. Simpson is widely projected to be selected late in the first round or early in the second, which means Arizona could face strong competition if they want to draft him. That situation has pushed the team to consider other quarterback options in case Simpson is no longer available.

Cardinals’ Draft Position and Simpson Scenario

Ty Simpson, a 23-year-old quarterback from Alabama, is seen as one of the more appealing quarterback prospects in this draft class. Because of his projected range in the draft, Arizona would likely need to trade up from the No. 34 pick to secure him.

General manager Monti Ossenfort must weigh the cost of such a move. Trading up would require additional draft assets, and the front office will need to decide if the potential reward is worth that price.

If the Cardinals decide to stay at their current position, they could shift their attention to several other quarterbacks who may still be available in the second round or later.

Garrett Nussmeier Seen as Top Alternative

One quarterback who has drawn attention as a possible fallback option is LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier. Known for his pocket presence, Nussmeier has shown the ability to read defenses and deliver accurate passes in the middle of the field.

During the 2024 season, he threw for more than 4,000 yards and recorded 29 touchdowns, displaying strong production in LSU’s offense. However, his 2025 season was shortened due to patellar tendinitis, limiting him to nine games. In that stretch he finished with 1,927 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Despite the injury setback, Nussmeier remains one of the more intriguing quarterback prospects outside of the top names in the class.

Carson Beck Brings Production but Questions Remain

Another quarterback linked to Arizona is Carson Beck, who recently played at Miami. Beck has demonstrated clear passing ability during his college career and has posted impressive numbers.

He finished with 3,813 passing yards and 30 touchdowns, showing the ability to lead a high-powered offense. However, Beck also recorded 12 interceptions, which has raised concerns about consistency and decision-making among evaluators.

Because of those questions, Beck is often projected as a late Day 2 or early Day 3 draft selection. For teams willing to develop his potential, he could become a valuable long-term option.

Drew Allar Offers Experience and Decision Making

Penn State quarterback Drew Allar represents another possible option for Arizona. Allar brings a large amount of college experience, having played 45 games during his career.

His junior season was particularly strong, as he threw for 3,327 yards and 24 touchdowns. Across four college seasons, he threw only 13 interceptions, highlighting his careful approach with the football.

However, injuries during his senior year limited him to just six games. That reduced playing time affected his draft stock. While some scouts have questioned his accuracy at times, Allar’s experience and decision-making could make him an appealing option if the Cardinals wait until later rounds.

    Cardinals Balancing Risk and Opportunity

Arizona’s decision in the draft will likely depend on how the quarterback board unfolds. If Simpson is selected before the Cardinals can reach him, the team may stay at No. 34 and choose among the remaining quarterback prospects.

The front office will evaluate factors such as injury history, overall upside and how well each player fits into offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur’s system.

With multiple quarterback options still available, the Cardinals have several paths they can take when the 2026 NFL Draft begins.
