Lan Larison is entering the 2026 season with renewed determination after missing his entire rookie year with the New England Patriots due to injury.

The undrafted running back is now healthy and focused on earning a spot on the Patriots’ roster during training camp and the preseason. After spending a year recovering from a broken foot, Larison believes he is ready to prove his value both on offense and special teams.

    Injury Setback During Rookie Year

Larison’s first preseason appearance in 2025 offered a glimpse of his potential. During the Patriots’ preseason opener against the Washington Commanders, he scored a two-yard rushing touchdown and finished with 35 rushing yards on seven carries in a dominant 48-18 victory.

However, shortly after that performance, Larison suffered a broken foot. The injury forced the Patriots to place him on season-ending injured reserve, ending his rookie campaign before it truly began.

While Larison focused on rehabilitation, the Patriots went on to reach their first Super Bowl appearance since 2018, making the missed opportunity even more frustrating for the young running back.

    Focus on Recovery and Training

Throughout the offseason, Larison dedicated his time to rehab and rebuilding strength. His primary goal has been to ensure he is fully healthy before the start of training camp.

The running back has emphasized the importance of entering camp at full fitness so he can compete without limitations. Being physically ready will be critical as he attempts to earn a role in one of the NFL’s most competitive roster battles.

    Preseason Performance Showed Promise

Before the injury, Larison demonstrated several qualities that made him an intriguing prospect for the Patriots.

During the preseason opener, he played 29 snaps and showed versatility across multiple phases of the game. In addition to his rushing production, he returned a kickoff for 25 yards and made a tackle on special teams.

His versatility could become a major factor in helping him secure a roster spot.

    College Success at UC Davis

Larison built an impressive reputation during his college career at UC Davis Aggies football.

He was one of the most productive offensive players in the program’s history and earned the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year honor twice.

Known for his ability to catch passes out of the backfield, Larison hopes to develop into a reliable receiving option for the Patriots while also contributing on special teams.

Tough Competition in the Patriots Backfield

Securing a roster spot will not be easy for Larison. The Patriots’ running back room already includes several established players.

The Patriots are also expected to select another running back in the upcoming draft, which could further increase the competition for roster spots.

    Larison’s Mindset Heading Into Camp

Despite the crowded depth chart, Larison remains confident in his abilities. He believes the key to earning a role will be focusing on one specific strength and excelling at it.

Whether as a return specialist, special teams contributor, or pass-catching running back, Larison hopes to show coaches he can be trusted in meaningful game situations.

He has also spoken about moving past rookie nerves and playing with greater confidence during camp and preseason games.

A Player to Watch This Summer

Larison’s journey from undrafted rookie to injured reserve has been challenging, but the upcoming training camp offers him a fresh opportunity.

If he stays healthy and performs well in preseason action, the young running back could carve out a valuable role with the Patriots in 2026.

For now, the focus remains simple: stay healthy, compete hard, and make the most of every opportunity during training camp.
