Howard head coach reflects on culture, leadership and a journey that shaped the Bison program: Howard University head coach Kenneth Blakeney delivered an emotional message after guiding the Bison to a historic NCAA Tournament victory. Surrounded by cheering Howard supporters, Blakeney spoke about pride, culture, and the long journey that led his team to one of the biggest moments in the program’s history.

The victory marked a special milestone for Howard basketball and for Blakeney, whose career has been built on leadership, perseverance and a strong belief in building the right culture within a team.

Blakeney made it clear that the win was not about him but about the players and the Howard community who supported the program through its rebuilding years.

“I’m so proud of these guys because it’s not about me, it’s about Howard and their student experience,” Blakeney said after the win. “These guys are going to remember this moment for the rest of their lives, and so will the Howard community.”

    The Culture Behind Howard’s Rise

Learning the difference between following culture and building one

During a post-game interview, Blakeney became emotional while discussing how the program was built.

He explained that early in his career he learned how to follow culture as a player, but coaching required something different — learning how to build one from the ground up.

Blakeney credited Howard University leadership for believing in him when he first arrived to lead the program.

“I had to learn how to build a culture,” he explained. “That took time.”

He expressed deep gratitude to university leaders who trusted him during the early stages of rebuilding the team.

Blakeney pointed out that the program’s early years were difficult, with very few wins and setbacks including the pandemic season. However, patience and support allowed the program to grow.

    Howard’s Historic NCAA Tournament Moment

Howard’s NCAA Tournament win is one of the most important moments in the program’s history. For Blakeney and the players, it represents years of effort and belief.

The head coach emphasized that the team understands the importance of the moment and the responsibility that comes with representing Howard University on the national stage.

Despite the excitement of the victory, Blakeney remained focused and humble. When asked about facing a strong opponent in the next round, he said his team had been fully focused on the previous matchup and respected the opponent’s performance.

Blakeney praised the opposing team and described the game as a competitive and memorable college basketball battle.
